City of London Churches Project
In June 2014 I decided I needed a photographic project to work on. It took a while but finally I hit upon the subject I was looking for - the many churches which are hidden away in the City of London. Following the reconstruction of the city after the Great Fire of London in 1666 there were no less than 75 churches in the Square Mile of the City of London. Falling numbers of worshippers during the 19th century led to a number of them being demolished and the bombings of World War II took their toll, with 23 churches being badly damaged or destroyed.
Today there are still over 50 churches within the square mile of the city - plenty of photographic inspiration to keep me occupied for many months to come! I add a new gallery of photos each time I visit a new church so please do pop back from time to time to check on my progress.
As with any project spread over several years, I now look back on some of my earlier sets of photos and feel I could improve upon them so I may yet make a return visit to of the churches. Ultimately I plan to create a photobook of the project.
